"Those innocent eyes slit my soul up like a razor."

Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

I think it's so funny that back in the day someone posted this quote and ppl reblogged it as an aesthetic or something when the original context is 31yo Fyodor Karamazov lusting over 16yo Sofia Ivanovna an abuse victim that was offered freedom by him only to keep suffering for the next 7 years of life she had left I love The Brothers Karamazov madly but yeah! it can be so fucked up! tbk

Opposite of "came back wrong" is "stayed exactly the same." Oh you want so badly to pretend that you have changed. You changed your face, you changed your name, you started leaning into a whole new role, but I know you. I know you. I know who you used to be, and I can see that person shining through you still. You can fool the world you can fool your friends you can fool yourself but you will not fool me.

I just saw a post talking about Jesus in Luke 22:42 and the quote was very familiar… Then I realized that it’s very similar to what Mitya says in Book VIII, chapter 8, “remove this cup from me”… Which belongs to Mark 14:36, after the Last Supper and before Jesus’ arrest and torments… Mitya quotes it when he abandons the celebrations, in a moment of suicidal urges, agonizing over the guilt over the murder he thought he had committed and his shame… Even when he returns to his “queen”, his heart knows suffering awaits. As someone who didn’t have any religious education, I learnt of the context of the Bible quote just now, and I’m just amazed at how prevalent the imitation of Christ is in this work, even more so when it happens in such a Dionysian chapter. I find the contrast and convergence between Heaven and Earth fantastic (something similar happens in Book VII chapter 4, “the mysteries of the Earth touch the mysteries of the stars”).
